Call Your Reps |
Remember:
Calling is more effective than emailing, and both are more effective than signing a petition
(which usually does very little).
Step 1. Find Your Members of Congress:
Note: unless you are calling a committee line, do NOT call someone who is not your rep. They only care about representing their constituents, and you will be taking up precious time and space their voicemail box.

Step 2. Focus on Urgent Issues:
It's important to remember that calls to our reps are most effective if we are all calling about the same thing on the same day. Reps will only hear from their staff about the top few issues mentioned in calls that day. Don't get caught calling about the wrong legislation. I follow the lead of my local Indivisible Group and from Celeste of It's Time To Fight -- she worked for Congress for 16 years so she has a good idea which things to be worried about and which things are not.
Step 3. Plan What to Say:
Keep it short, to the point, and address 1-3 issues per call max. Here's a general recipe:
Hi, my name is [NAME], and I am a constituent from [City or Zip Code **this is important**].
I am calling about [URGENT ISSUE]. I'm very concerned about [ISSUE] because [REASON & REASON 2]. This issue has [AFFECTED ME PERSONALLY (if you have a short & compelling story, tell it)]. I'd urge [REP NAME] to [TAKE ACTION (e.g."vote NO", "speak out," "do everything in their power to .." etc)]. Thank you so much for your time.
Thankfully there are lots of websites that have call scripts worked up for specific issues -- and I have some on this website too (see links below)

Cabinet Confirmation Hearings
Many of Trump's cabinet picks are highly unqualified and many appear to have conflicts of interest and agendas that will harm the most vulnerable Americans. Below are links to information about and protest call scripts for the nominees I feel pose the greatest threat:
